I noted that this year I wanted to write more and read longer books. So far I've read a ton of short graphic novels and written a moderate amount. I've been slowly making my way through The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America From 1890 to the Present by David Treuer for the past week or so. I'm approximately half way through the book, and if there's one thing I know - as a society we have not been educated about indigenous tribes in the Americas. At all. I had been reading this book via e-book and audiobook, but I went to my library to get the physical copy so I can also read over Shabbat.
Today, I went through that physical copy to mark up passages I wanted to pay particular attention to for consideration. Part of the difficulty that I'm finding with this book is that I don't know everything. It's almost too much information for me to retain anything. I could just speed through it and pretend that I've learned things...but I don't want to do that. So what I'm going to do is leave you all with some passages that I found particularly interesting. Consider this sort of an annotated bibliography of sorts, but all from the same source. I'll probably blow up your inboxes a few times this week - so get ready.
Indian Slavery: I knew that Indigenous folks were enslaved by Europeans, but I don't think I really know anything about the particulars. I got a book out of the library on this that is next on my list.
